コーネル大学（英称:Cornell University）は、アメリカ合衆国ニューヨーク州イサカ市に本部を置くアメリカの私立大学である。1865年に設置された。

この大学は、私立と公立の両方の要素を持つ大学である。アイビー・リーグに属し、幅広い分野での研究において世界の大学をリードしている。その中でも特に工学/コンピューター科学やホテル経営は著名であり、U.S. News による 2005 年度のランキングでは "科学工学" 、 "物理工学" などがアメリカで第一位にランクされた。建築学の分野でも北アメリカで最も入学が困難といわれる。

その他にも、コーネル大学は上海交通大学による2005年度の世界における大学ランキングで12位にランクされる[1]など、アメリカのみならず、世界的にも非常に評価が高く、常にトップ層に位置する大学である。

[編集] 沿革

コーネル大学は、1865年に、米国の電信事業における先駆者でありニューヨーク州上院議員であったエズラ・コーネルと、同じく州上院議員でミシガン大学の元教授であったアンドリュー・ディクソン・ホワイトによって設立憲章が起草され、1868年 10月7日、3年余りの準備期間の後、ニューヨーク州イサカに開設された。

コーネル大学は、設立当初からニューヨーク州における土地交付大学（ Land-grant university）である一方、アイビー・リーグの一校としても名を連ねるという、世界でも珍しい半官半民の大学の一つである。

同大学の著名な研究分野である物理工学、ナノテクノロジー、生命科学、ホテル経営学、農学などは世界一と評されている；又、コンピュータ科学もアイビー・リーグの中で最大の施設と研究を誇り、北米でトップ 5 に入る名門分野である (コーネル大学のコンピュータ科学については、下記の特筆すべき点を参照)。

[編集] 特筆すべき点

1970年代から始まった情報検索システムであるSMARTシステムの研究開発等によって、また、電子図書館（Digital Archive、Digital Library）の実現において先駆的な業績を残した。その他には、データベース分野、知識処理の分野でも数多くの業績を残している。

ホテル経営学の分野では、数多くの卒業生が世界の一流ホテルで活躍している。

また、物理学の分野でもコンピュータ科学学科との連携により、高エネルギー物理学のための情報交換プロトコル等の設計でも業績を残している。

農学の分野では、北米の数多くの先進的な農場等で活躍する卒業生を輩出し、FAOやアメリカ合衆国農務省(USDA)、更にはUNDP等で活躍する卒業生もいる。

生命科学の分野では、物理学の分野と同じくコンピュータ科学学科との連携により、NIHの遺伝情報データベースの構築等で業績を上げている。また、医学分野との連携によって、蛋白質の解析等の分野でも成果を挙げつつある。

SETI@Home（関連項目：SETI）プロジェクトにおけるデータの提供を行っている、プエルトリコにあるアレシボ電波天文台の運営を全米科学財団（NSF National Science Foundation）より委託を受けて行っている。</br>
